Sophie Colette Cavanaugh
Sophie is an Argentine Tango dancer, instructor, performer, & organizer. She began to study Argentine tango in 2017 as her first social partner dance and was immediately fascinated by the implications of exploring space via embodied close embrace with a partner, as well as the rich sociocultural history of the dance. Sophie approaches teaching with two main tenets: 1) if you have a body, you can dance, and 2) staying both curious and kind is the best way to learn anything. She's specifically interested in queer, body-positive, and trauma-informed modalities, and believes fiercely in the healing alchemy of dance to embolden, embody, and empower every human.
Sophie's dance journey began with a love of classical ballet, studying with the Ohio Dance Theatre throughout her early childhood into teenage years. Upon attending Kalamazoo College, she joined the student dance collective, Frelon, and studied modern, jazz, and hip hop. Performing with Frelon throughout her time at college and ultimately declaring a concentration in Dance Performance, Sophie's musical background as a violinist and her academic background in Theatre, Anthropology, and Women & Gender Studies all shaped her passion for dance in unique ways -- many of which are observable today in her stylistic blend of thoughtfulness, sensuality, play, theatrical flair, and conscious musicality.
Along with her dance partner, Andrew Minor, Sophie prioritizes the activation of community spaces with tango -- in addition to a regular 3rd Friday community milonga at Viva, they host a monthly 1st Friday Art Crawl milonga on Waterloo Rd in North Collinwood, and are enthusiastic members of the broader Midwest tango scene & beyond, often traveling to social dance, teach, and perform. (For more of Drew & Sophie's work and events, check out @drewandsophtango on Instagram!) When she's not at the studio or organizing, Sophie can be found working as an HR professional, tarot card reader, and freelance writer. She is constantly thinking about which book to read next, what her next tattoo should be, and/or matriarchy, and enjoys meandering forest/beach dates with her beloveds.
