Heriberto Perez was born in Ponce, Puerto Rico before moving to Philadelphia, PA
in his youth. Salsa music and dance as well as Boleros, Folklorico and Plena were
part of his upbringing in a Puerto Rican household. After graduating with a Bachelors
of Arts in graphic design from Philadelphia's University of the Arts, Heriberto
began to teach dance as well as became an active social dancer in many styles of
from Salsa to Argentine Tango and Lindy Hop/Swing.
He perfected his social dancing
skills in Pittsburgh, PA where he moved to pursue his graphics design career. Dance
was a passion that he pursued every week while working in the corporate world. He
not only danced, but taught, performed and put on events. He eventually became one
of the co-owners of Step 2 It Studio, a Ballroom, Latin & Swing dance studio in
Pittsburgh. Upon moving to Cleveland, he officially made dance instruction and performance
his second career. He teamed up with Latin dance professional Rebecca Sweet of Viva
dance! studio and has found fulfillment as a professional instructor at this facility.
He has performed with his Argentine Tango coach, Carina Losano (Washington, DC)
Mambo Coach Melissa Rosado (New York, NY) and with Rebecca Sweet (Cleveland, OH)
in such venues as the Cleveland Playhouse, Severance Hall and the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame. Rebecca and Heriberto are regularly featured dancers and judges for
the Hispanic Business Association, Esperanza's "Viva la Salsa" event and Tri-C Jazz
Festival's "Salsa Picante" events where they performed with Larry Harlowe and Johnny
Pacheco to name a few.
Heriberto and Rebecca have been featured dancers on Cleveland's
top television stations and have competed in all local Dancing with the Stars events.
They performed in and choreographed benefit shows for Southwest General Hospital,
the Diabetes Association of Greater Cleveland and for the American Heart Association.
They most recently performed and taught a "Leading and Following" technique boot
camp at this year's DC Salsa Congress. Heriberto is also part of the growing Blues
and Argentine Tango scene and was just recently ask to be part of the a traveling
national event called Fusion Exchange, which this year will be held in Boston January
of 2011.
Heriberto continues to learn, educate and inspire students in multiple
fields of dance such as Mambo, Salsa, Merengue, Cha Cha, Bachata, Lindy Hop, Triple
Step Swing, West Coast Swing, Blues, Argentine Tango, International Latin, Rhythm
and Ballroom to name a few. He finds that in learning and understanding different
dances helps to explain movement, connection to partner, lead / follow and connecting
to the music.
